Topic: A New Name
Bible Reading: – 1 Chronicle 4:1-10
Our names always have meanings and there are reasons our parents give particular names to us. Some names are good while others are not: but a name has a way of affecting the bearer’s life. The names of God tell us who he is; His character and what He can do e.g. Jehovah Shalom meaning God our peace, Jehovah Jireh God our provider, etc.
Sometimes when we establish a new relationship with God, there is a new name signifying the new relationship. A name is very important and the lives of people are one way or the other patterned after their names. Names are given for many reasons e.g. religion, situation or circumstances surrounding the birth etc.
In our text today, Jabez meaning pain was so named by his mother because she gave birth to him in pain. Eli’s daughter-in-law gave birth to a son after the death of her husband, father-in-law and during the period the ark of God was also captured she therefore named him Ichabod meaning “No Glory” At a point in Jabez’s life, he cried to God because his life was full of pain, it was patterned after his name. God heard his cry and granted his request.
Have you ever considered the reason for your name, even the family name you bear? Have you ever asked why you were given that name or why your family bears that name? Maybe you have investigated your genealogy or family tree and you discovered that the lives of most members of your family including yours have been adversely influenced by your family name. Dear readers, why not like Jabez do something about it today? Cry to God and he will grant your request and change the bad influence of that name. You need an encounter with Jesus Christ and He will give you a new name.
A good name is better than precious ointment Eccl. 7:1a
