Bible Reading – Matthew 5:33-37
As we commence our meditation on the subject of vows and pledges, the Scripture we read today provides an insight to God’s perspective on how we should conduct our affairs with one another and with Him, especially as it relates to vows, promises and pledges.
We have many promises from God and the highlights of the promise theme in Scripture can be seen in the first promise of the gospel given to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden immediately after the fall into sin {Gen. 3:15}. Subsequent promises are the covenants God made with Abraham {Gen. 12, 15 and 17} and with David {2 Samuel 7:1}, followed by the promise of a new covenant {Jer. 31}.
Jesus understood that as with a covenant which involves the lesser swearing to the greater, making an oath in other to affirm one’s word involves swearing by something or someone greater. Jesus therefore forbids oath as a mechanism to establish the veracity of our word. Our relationships must be based entirely on TRUST and INTEGRITY.
Trust can only be built on the trustworthiness of the parties – a virtue that can only come out of a regenerated heart as a natural spring because the character we portray on the outside is an overflow from the heart.
PRAYER: LORD MAKE ME TRUTHFUL IN THE INWARD PARTS
