Topic: Let Your Yes Be Yes….

Bible Reading: – Ecclesiastes 5:1-5

One distinguishing character of the Christian is that of some who keeps his or her promises, because ‘by their fruits you will know them’ Amos 3:3 says can two walk together unless they agree?. A vow is a serious promise or pledge made to God or to another before God.

Tithing, sacrifices and circumcision were commanded by the Mosaic Law. Vow making was not. Psalm 50:14 says, “Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High”. The command is to PAY, that is, to keep or fulfill a pledge that has already been made. No order is given to make such promises in the first place. We noted yesterday that Christians have become so accommodating of ‘dissembling’ but even more worrying is the frequency with which believers fail to keep their word.

The Scripture reading today is strong in admonishing “Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter anything before God… therefore let your words be few” Eccl.5:2. The little ‘rearrangement’ begins   a chain reaction that eventually leads to big untruths. As someone has said, sin matures in degrees.

James 1:15 tells us; “Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. My Reader, take note of this: “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but they that deal truly are His delight” Prov. 12:22. Why lying, let your yes be yes…

PRAYER: O LORD, GRANT ME THE GRACE TO KEEP MY WORD.
