Topic: Consider Your Words

Bible Reading: – Judges 11:30-39

We learnt three key admonitions on Friday: first, do not be rash with your mouth; second, keep your words few; and third, it is better not to vow than to make one and fail to pay. In the story we read today, Jephthah, a mighty man of valour, had made a vow to offer as a burnt offering to God whatsoever came out from his house to meet him first if he returned victorious from battle. He succeeded in war, and as it happened his daughter, an only child, came out to meet him with dancing to celebrate her father’s victory in war. Jephthah was bound by his vow, and his daughter was gracious about it.

The purpose of a vow is to win a desired favour from the Lord. Vows can also be used to express gratitude to Him for some deliverance or benefit. Some have proved their absolute devotion to God by abstaining from specific things. Dedication of oneself and separation to the Lord were the primary features of a Nazirate vow. Samson, Samuel, and John the Baptist were the most familiar examples of those who took this type of vow.

In-case you did not remember anything in today devotion, keep this in mind “If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth” {Numbers 30:3}.
