Topic: Abstinence:- The Ultimate Dedication

Bible Reading: – Numbers 6:1-8

The second kind of vow is abstinence; a promise to abstain from some lawful act or enjoyment, or some activity that otherwise constitutes self-denial. As with any vow, this is completely voluntary, but such vow carries tremendous self denial. The Nazirite vow is a classic example, and requires devotees to comply with a unique and usually Spartan life style with clear identification features.

These vows also carried purification requirements, in the event of an inadvertent pollution. There were also prescriptions of what could be offered as a vow. Nothing already holy to the Lord, or intrinsically unholy or blemished in the slightest degree could be offered as a vow {Leviticus 27:26, Deuteronomy 23:18, Leviticus 22:23}. The vows of dependent women – wives or daughters – did not stand unless ratified or validated explicitly or implicitly by husband or father {Numbers 30:3-16}.
